The Historic New Orleans Collection
A Museum:
First of all the Collection is a museum housed in a complex of historic French Quarter buildings at 533 Royal Street. There are both permenant and changing exhibitions illustrating the history of the New Orleans and Louisiana, the Williams Residence house museum, and a museum shop.
A Research Center:
Associated with the Historic New Orleans Collection is the Williams Research Center, composed of curatorial, manuscripts, and library collections, is housed in a restored police and court building at 410 Chartres Street.
Annual Prize for Historic Writing:
The KEMPER AND LEILA WILLIAMS PRIZE, named for the founders of the Historic New Orleans Collection, offers a cash award of $1,500 for the best work on Louisiana history published each year. The prize continues the former General L. Kemper Williams prizes, offered from 1974 through 1996 by the Historic New Orleans Collection and the Louisiana Historical Association.
Education Outreach :
The Collection has an extensive education outreach program designed for K-12 students to promote the history of New Orleans and of Louisiana. The program includes classroom presentations, teacher workshops, and field trips.
Publisher:
The Collection is also a publisher. Its publications include exhibition catalogues, a quarterly journal, preservation guides, and books based on materials in the research collections. All publications are available online or at the Museum shop.
