Living With Microtia

103 9
Microtia is a birth defect that happens to many people.
It is when the ears are way smaller than they should be or deformed.
There are various levels, which are called grades, as to how bad this issue is.
Many children are born with this and do not have to suffer much more than aesthetic issues, but there are those out there that need to look into some sort of reconstructive surgery to help make their hearing better.
Why Does this Happen? No one really knows why Microtia happens.
They only know that there are solutions to this particular issue.
The best way to approach this problem is to discuss it with a doctor.
There may even be some type of support group out there for other parents.
If you find one, you will be able to talk to people who have already been through the journey you may be embarking on.
When it comes to statistics, it seems that it is more common in males than females.
Eventually, science will be able to come up with a reason.
Grade Levels There are grades that establish the severity of the problem.
They go from 1 to 4.
This is an extreme range as 1 is a simple deformation without affecting the hearing of the person that has it.
While 4 pretty much means they do not have an ear at all.
This can negatively impact one's hearing or take it away completely, depending on the circumstances.
If someone has a grade level of 1, there is no real need to treat the problem.
No medical need, anyway.
They may want to fix it due to aesthetic reasons.
Outside of that, the person with this issue does not have negatively impacted hearing or anything of the like.
They simply have smaller ears.
It is important to see a doctor to figure out which grade level your child has.
Once this is figured out, they can tell you what kind of procedures are necessary to help them.
Surgeries One of the main treatments is reconstructive surgery.
This is generally used by people with grades ranging from 2-4.
Four is the most extreme, as they simply have no ear.
They need to be able to find a surgeon that will be able to construct one.
This will help to make their hearing better and cut back on other uncomfortable issues that happen due to this particular issue.
Microtia can be an issue that is easily treated.
Take the time to truly look into your options.
Talk to your doctors.
Do not hesitate to ask them whatever questions that you have.
The right doctor will be able to help you and your child fix the problem.
This will lead to a more normal life for the patient.
