Banana Plant Identification
- Banana plants are upright herbaceous plants that produce pseudostems resembling tree trunks. The giant green banana leaves reach 9 feet long and 2 feet wide. The eight to 12 leaves are attached to the trunk by short stems.
- Banana plants grow from underground rhizomes. The plants send out 30 feet of roots in loose, fertile soil. Freezing temperatures kill the above-ground part of the banana plant. The rhizome will survive temperatures down to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. When the weather warms again, the rhizome sends up new shoots.
- Flower stalks develop in the middle of the trunk and a large blossom in warm climates. Hands of bananas form without pollination.
