Hunting in Kentucky
- 1). Decide what game animal or bird you want to hunt and determine if it is legal. In Kentucky you are allowed to hunt for deer, elk, bear, small game and furbearers, turkey, dove, wood duck, teal, woodcock, snipe and crow. If you are interested in hunting something not on this list, contact the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
- 2). Determine the animal's hunting season. The seasons are listed on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources website. There are different seasons even for the same animal depending on such items as type of weapon used, amount of antlers on the animal, age of the hunter, and geographical zone in the state.
- 3). Purchase an appropriate license or tag for the animal you wish to hunt. These are required in order for you to hunt. They are available for specific lengths of time and for specific animals. You can buy the license or tag directly from Kentucky's Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources website.
- 4). Educate yourself on bag limits and other hunting laws. You will be prosecuted if you take more animals than allowed or hunt an animal out of season.
- 5). Plan where you will hunt in the state and where you want to sleep if overnighting is necessary. You can determine this by searching online and putting in your parameters such as geographical area, animal and time frame.
