Why Meditate?
At my last meditation session my instructor, Bala, asked if we were doing our meditations every day and every night as he suggested.
I felt like a little kid who had not done her homework.
Ever since I started working from home I am on my own schedule, rather than being run by somebody else's.
So, I confessed I haven't been doing the twice-daily meditations.
Bala responded patiently, and encouraged us to try to do it as often as we can.
He explained that it was for our benefit, not his.
Mark (my husband) then asked him what we were doing this for - the whole meditation process - was it for feeling good or for enlightenment? I already knew the answer, but I enjoyed listening to his response again.
The meditation (at least the one he proposes) is for enlightenment.
If you practice diligently you will grow spiritually, and get the point where you feel a sense of oneness with the world.
The interesting part is, once in this state of oneness you must tear yourself from it, because you must also live in the material world (unless you choose to become a monk).
The ultimate state of oneness leaves you with a feeling of not caring about anything as mundane as money or food or television or any of the trappings of our daily lives - in other words, no worries.
Sounds like a good way to lose a few pounds, but I can see where it would not be practical to be in that state and make a living.
I imagine myself laughing in a carefree way as the bills keep coming in.
But, the thought of being able to get this state is something I would like to achieve just the same.
Mark and I made a renewed to commitment to meditate at least once a day - sounds doable.
Bala explained that there are many plateaus along the way the ultimate oneness level.
Some of them sounded just as enjoyable.
Imagine looking at a flower and, and being so filled with delight and wonder at its beauty that you are flooded with positive emotion.
I like to think of myself as a stop-and-smell-the-roses type of girl, but, in reality, I have a long way to go.
I look forward to the journey.
