Are Your Website Visitors Bouncing and Do You Care?

103 6
How many pages do your website visitors check out before they head off to some other site?  Depending on the way you're running your online business, that can be an important question.
The answer is can be revealed by looking at the "average page views" stats in your analysis, but it can also be found in your "bounce" stats.
A visitor is said to have "bounced" when he or she only sees the one page upon which he or she landed before heading for the hills.
If you have a big fat bounce number, that can be a sign of trouble.
That's especially true if your profit improves with the viewing of multiple pages.
For instance, if you're in the "virtual real estate" business and have a thick, content-laden site monetized with contextual advertising your odds of getting that paying ad click probably increases as the visitor stays around.
If you have massive bounce, you aren't getting a shot at making your money.
If the slide down your sales funnel requires a click or two through your site from the most common landing pages, you don't want to see a high bounce rate.
On the other hand, there are times when bounce doesn't really mean much.
Take the good ol' sales page, for example.
  It's one long page.
People can do one of two things.
They can either buy or leave.
  That's it.
And we know that a relatively small fraction are not going to buy even if you have an awesome sales copy and laser-targeted traffic.
So, in that case, you don't need to be worried if you find out your website visitors are bouncing off into the sunset.
Check your numbers and find out who's doing what.
It's going to give you some interesting and potentially valuable information.
