How to Lower Humidity in Your Home During Summer
- 1). Place exhaust fans in high humidity areas in the home, such as a bathroom. Exhaust fans pull air out of a room and send it to the outside. Turn on the exhaust fan when you plan to take a shower. Other high humidity areas are the kitchen and laundry room. Turn on the exhaust fan when you cook on the stove or when you wash clothes. Exhaust fans usually sit on a windowsill for simple installation.
- 2). Limit water use during the hottest parts of the way. For example, take your shower in the early morning or late evening when the humidity outside is less. This reduces the feeling of higher humidity within the home.
- 3). Install a dehumidifier in rooms with heavy traffic, such as the living room. Place the dehumidifier next to a window so you can connect a garden hose to the outlet port on the dehumidifier and then snake the hose out of a window. This prevents the need to drain the collection tank and allows you the ability to run the dehumidifier whenever needed.
- 4). Install window air-conditioners in rooms with heavy traffic if you do not have central air. Air conditioners work by pulling water out of the air and then by recirculation the dry air back into the home. The air-conditioner then forces the water out of the home via the condenser coils.
- 5). Hang wet clothes on a clothesline outside the home if possible. Drying clothes in an electric dryer produces more moisture. If you must use a dryer, utilize an exhaust fan or a dehumidifier in conjunction with the dryer.
