Gourmet Coffee in São Paulo

The history of Octavio Café, one of Brazil's best coffee brands, dates back to the 1940s. Fazenda Nossa Senhora Aparecida, in the Alta Mogiana region of São Paulo State, is still the source for the house blend served at Octavio Café, the company's coffee bar and bistro in São Paulo's upscale Jardins district.
Opened in 2007, the café occupies a coffee-cup-shaped building with brise soleil which interacts beautifully with the Faria Lima Avenue sidewalk, paved in the 1966 design by Mirthes Bernardes evoking the outline of São Paulo State.

Inside, natural materials reinforce the state's coffee glory in reclaimed peroba rosa flooring like that of historic coffee farms and wall texture made from chemical-free soil; high-tech materials tell of coffee's processing in modern machines.

The central area of the 4,300-square foot café holds the roaster. Try the espresso, latte, machiatto and other coffees made from the Octávio blend - the award-winning product, also available for purchase, comes from coffee plants grown in purple soil, which were aligned with the sun's orbit for best maturation. Sustainable practices on the farm include health and education benefits for workers and the use of coffee residues in fertilization.

The team of baristas at Octavio Café is supervised by Tabatha Creazo. Chef Kika Toledo creates the menus - bistro-style lunch and dinner with several types of salad, quiches and fresh-made pasta; varied finger foods for happy hour and an array of treats that go well with coffee, such as mousse, panna cotta and pies.

On weekends, there's rabanada and croque madame for breakfast.

Besides the central area, the café - popular with international travelers - has a dining room, a lounge, a winter garden, an outdoor lounge with a fireplace and a deck.

Since April 2012, Octavio Café has hosted art exhibits promoted by Cristiane Quercia, one of the executive directors of the Sol Panamby Organizations, of which the café is part, and curated by Emanuel von Lauenstein Massarani, an art critic and president of the Historical Patrimony Recuperation Institute of São Paulo.

From Dec.6 to Dec.19, 2012, the cafe is hosting "Forças Cósmicas" (Cosmic Forces), an exhibition of works by Mitiko Yanagui.

Born in Martinópolis, São Paulo State, Yanagui first launched her career as a self-taught artist and later developed her skills over the course of numerous trips abroad.

Fine mastery of color and light is a characteristic of her works, which often convey a dreamlike quality.

Keep up with upcoming exhibits on the Octavio Café Facebook.

Musical Thursdays

Several musical styles are featured in Quintas Musicais, the Thursday evening performances at the café. Curated by Juliano d’Horta Beccari, the event is presenting Brazilian instrumental music and jazz with Walter Pinheiro (flute, saxophone), Airton Fernandes (bass) and Juliano d’Horta Beccari (piano, keyboards) in December 2012 and January 2013.
