Land snail shell necklaces like the one worn by this teenager and by the Kuikuro in general are valued exchange objects in Xingu National Park, Mato Grosso, Brazil. They are often traded for pottery made by the Aruak groups who live in the area.

During their annual visit to Toca da Raposa, in Sao Paulo, the Kuikuro sell handicrafts such as adornments, benches and hammocks. Making objects for sale is an important part of the Kuikuro economy today.
