How to prepare for a rectoscopy

105 8
Doctors perform rectoscopy on a patient to check for anomalies within the rectum and the preceding regions of the internal human body. These examinations are critical for proper diagnosis and treatment. Preparing for a rectoscopy is easy and requires just a little effort on the part of the patient to overcome the mental blocks that one may naturally have if someone is to creep into his/her rear.

Doctor knows best

Realize that the doctor knows what he/she is doing (as long as you have approached a qualified doctor). It would be soothing to the nerves if you ask to have a doctor known to you to perform the procedure. Nobody would perform a rectoscopy unless it is utmost essential especially for the early diagnosis of piles and cancer, both which can be cured if detected early.

Pain

Rectoscopy is not a painful procedure. Thousands of people are having it done everyday without sedatives or anesthesia. Moreover, the procedure would last only for a few minutes. If you are still unconvinced, ask the doctor to play a soft music while doing the examination. In fact, the only pain that one feels during the procedure is when the equipment reaches the point of discomfiture that should be informed to the doctor.

Before the rectoscopy

It is advisable not to eat too much twelve hours before a rectoscopy as this may obstruct the doctor's view as fecal matter may clog the pathway. Fasting is not necessary although eating nothing half an hour before the procedure is recommended. An enema is done by injecting through a rubber nozzle into the anal region, a solution of water and soap to clean out the intestinal tract.

The procedure

The patient will be first asked to lie in a crouched position with elbow and knee touching the table. Some doctors also would ask patients to lie on their left side with the thighs flexed to allow the doctor to examine the anal region and check for lesions on the inner and outer sides. The doctor will then insert a long thin hollow rod into the canal and push forward slowly. At this point, if the patient feels pain, the doctor must be told at once. Once the rod goes through its length, a fiber optic cable with camera is inserted into the hollow region and allows the doctor to view the patient's interior. Within five to ten minutes, the procedure is reversed and the examination would be over.

After

The rectoscopy procedure in itself is not painful but the patient might take a few minutes to recuperate from the insertion as it is not every day that someone gets a look at your intestines. The doctor would then debrief the patient on a possible diagnosis and further treatment procedures. Any side effects felt after the procedure are usually temporary. However, if it persists for more than a day, bring it to the notice of the doctor.

Early detection is essential for treating anything from the common cold to the much-feared cancer. If you find bleeding from the anus or an abscess around the rear, please do visit the doctor. Even a seemingly innocuous stomachache should not be self-treated.
