Neoprene Temperature Characteristics

    Resistant

    • Neoprene has excellent temperature resistant properties and possesses an ability to contract. Its elastomeric properties are maintained over a large temperature range. Elastomers are long-chain polymers. They cross link, which is called vulcanization, according to Elderrubber.com. When the vulcanization process takes place this creates memory or rubbery properties.

    All-Purpose Material

    • This material resists aging, sunlight, oils and when in service tolerates temperatures from 40 degrees below zero to 230 degrees Fahrenheit. However, it has limited flexibility when in low temperatures. Otherwise this material has few limitations; it weathers well and it resists flex cracking, acids and abrasion. It is also flame resistant, according to DuPont.

    Wetsuits

    • Wetsuits are made of Neoprene. This material serves as protection against the elements. The thicker the Neoprene the more insulation the surfer, swimmer, rafter or kayaker has. Wetsuits protect the wearer from cold sensitivity, wind, water and air temperature, according to Wetsuitmegastore. It allows the individual to undertake activities when the weather isn't cooperating and it's cold.

    Insulation and Warmth

    • Wetsuits provide insulation and warmth because the foamed neoprene contains gas cells; tiny enclosed, yet separate gas bubbles. Neoprene is buoyant because of the foam cells. A wet suit is constructed of 7-mm Neoprene to provide warmth and insulation. The wet suit becomes thinner when a diver is at great depths because the material compresses as a result of the pressure underwater.
