- 1). File your taxes on the Free File website. The IRS website provides a direct link to Free File. This option can only be used until October 15 for taxes up to six months late for the current year. The website is available for all filers from January 16 to October 15 each year.
- 2). Use Prior Tax, an online company. This company allows you to file taxes from previous years as well as the current year. It costs about $50 to file both your state and federal taxes. Prior Tax can even obtain old IRS forms and past year tax returns if you need them. The company offers audit protection for about $40.
- 3). File taxes through a state program. Some states offer online programs for filing past due taxes with fewer penalties. For example, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has such a website. If you file your taxes here, you might avoid penalties if you pay the back taxes and participate in a Voluntary Disclosure program.
