How to Register a Business License
- 1). Go to "Business.gov," the official government website to apply for a business permit in the United States.
- 2). Enter your zip code and select the type of business for which you wish to apply for a permit. Alternatively, you can select your state from the list of states and U.S. territories.
- 3). Apply for an employer identification number (EIN). In certain states, you must also register a tax-specific identification number, which will allow you to declare and pay taxes.
- 4). Find any state-specific laws for permits, including health permits, zoning permits, building permits, tax permits, signage permits and more. The laws regarding these permits vary per state and city.
- 5). According to Business.gov, all corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and nonprofit organizations must register with the state agency - an incorporation filing. Only sole proprietorships do not need to register.
- 6). Create your DBA (doing business as). This is your business name, which will be officially registered with your state and the federal government.
