New England is famous for its stunning fall colors, and rightfully so. This heavily-forested region stretches from Maine in the north to Connecticut in the south and encompasses New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island along the way. According to World Wildlife.org, an international conservation organization, by the mid-1800s most of New England's indigenous forests, which consist of northern hardwoods and spruce trees, were cleared to make way for agricultural crops and pastures. By the mid-1900s, most farms had been abandoned, allowing the forest to again take over almost 75 percent of the region. All of those trees create the perfect conditions for a scenic fall tour of New England.
