Tall Red Bushy Flowers

    • Finding plants to define specific areas of the garden and fit with the color scheme is an ongoing chore for gardeners each year. Typically tall plants are designated a spot in the back of the garden to form the background. Bushy plants act as fillers for wide-open spaces. Selecting plants with both characteristics gives a gardener the opportunity to add depth and dimension to their garden. Many varieties of tall, red bushy plants are perennials.

    Bee Balm

    • Bee balm (Monarda didyma) is a perennial flowering plant with a large variety of cultivars. Bee balm is a species of plant from the Lamiaceae family and native to the eastern regions of North America. This bushy plant grows to heights of 2 to 4 feet, with fragrant green foliage with a medium spread of 3 feet. The leaves have an oval shape with 3- to 6-inch long toothed edges and tiny hairs on the surface. All summer long, bee balm flowers with tall red flowers that sprout from the plant's clumping formation. The blossoms form into tubular flowers 2 to 3 inches in length. Bee balm thrives in the full sun with partial shade during the day. This long blooming perennial requires well-draining, moist soil. The bee balm plant attracts pollinators like bees, butterflies and hummingbirds into the garden, as well.

    Cardinal Flower

    • The cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis L) is an herbaceous perennial plant native to wetlands, streams and swamps. This tall bushy plant originates in the United States. The cardinal flower develops into a 3- to 6-foot tall plant with large, showy red blossoms. The blooms start budding in the late spring and continue until mid autumn, forming on 8-inch light green terminal spikes. Three lower petals and two upper petals that jut out from a tubular base form these red blooms. The deciduous leaves of the cardinal flower resemble dark green pointed lances. This herb plant enjoys a variety of light from sun to shade, and needs wet to moist soil. In the wild, the cardinal flower lures hummingbirds to pollinate its flowers.

    Pagoda Flower

    • The pagoda flower (Clerodendron paniculatum) belongs to the Verbenaceae family and is an indigenous plant to Southeast Asia. This herbaceous perennial matures into a 4- to 6-foot tall plant with a spread of 2 to 3 feet. The foliage of the pagoda flower is a deciduous to semi evergreen, with egg shaped leaves in a medium or dark green shade. Coarsely textured fragrant leaves are 12 inches in diameter and feature serrated edges. This tall, bushy plant blooms during the middle of summer, and continues blooming through fall. The flowers develop in clusters of numerous large showy blossoms in a red hue. The pagoda flower likes partial to full sun and rich moist soil.
