How to Catch Pompano

    • 1). Choose the location you will fish for pompano. The surf is always the most popular and most productive place to fish for pompano. Some also have luck in local rivers but you should concentrate on the beaches to start.

    • 2). Attach the pompano rig to the fishing line coming off of your fishing reel. Pompano rigs consist of 2-3 hooks and have a clip at the bottom of the rig to attach weight.

    • 3). Attach your pyramid sinker to the bottom of your pompano rig. The size will depend on the current fishing conditions and usually ranges from 1/2-2 ounces.

    • 4). Select the bait you are going to use and put it on your hook. The most popular are live sand fleas, live shrimp, or cut strips of clam. By far sand fleas are the best to catch the most pompano but may be difficult to find at times. Check your local bait store to see what baits they have available or catch your own.

    • 5). Cast your rod out as far as you can. The farther past the breaking waves you ca get it the better. Pompano typically stay a bit further offshore than other fish so if you want to catch them you have got to get your line out there.

    • 6). Wait patiently until a pompano bites. This make take up to 30 minutes before reeling into check your bait. Try to wait as long as possible, you don't want to keep checking your bait and not having it in the water.

    • 7). Set the hook immediately with moderate pressure when you feel a pompano bite. Before reeling the fish in let it stay for 5-10 seconds to see if another bites. Pompano travel in schools and if one bites you still have 1-2 hooks left to catch another.

    • 8). Reel your fresh catch in if no other fish bites in the 5-10 period.

    • 9). Start back at step 4 and enjoy catching as much pompano as you can!
