The Napkin: The Only Item You Need
Human beings are very resourceful creatures. Let us praise and bow at the feet of those who have given us the wheel, western medicine and cable television. Even though we have come this far, the truth is, we have it easy. Some of us are better off than others - blame it on the economy, global warming or even extraterrestrial intervention. In the end, it doesn't really matter because every generation seems to know more than the one before it.Â
As children we hear the guidance from our parents on a daily basis - clean your room - wash behind your ears - use a napkin - go to bed - it is all a part of the give and take relationship we have grown to despise and love.
Unfortunately, as youngsters we do not appreciate the words of wisdom we receive.  Each phrase, useful or not, is an itch that we just can't reach. We are not just the products of our environment, we are the whining, money spending, ne'er-do-wells that our parents have grown to love and despise, at least, just a little. We have become very resourceful creatures thanks to the people who have raised us and yes, in certain cultures, a television set is considered a person too.
(Yes, I am aware that the following situation is farfetched, but that's the whole point.)
Suppose it is barbeque night at your favorite watering hole and there isn't a napkin or a moist towelette to save your life? What are you to do then? Most of us would go to the nearest restroom, others would use their sleeve or their pant leg and yet the Boy Scout among us all would have predicted this outcome in the first place. Ordering extra napkins for such a catastrophe and maybe even a couple hundred more for the apocalypse isn't such a bad idea. Who says we have to live like barbarians in a time of total mayhem?  Â
There will come a time, if it has not happened yet, when we are all going to stare our evil twin in the face. We know this knucklehead very well. It is the same person guilty of taking out a roll of toilet paper during a black tie formal. There is much to be said for such an action in a time of war. Kudos, to those who have tried - you are victorious among the many who have failed.     Â
