Proper Format for a Thank You Letter for a Scholarship

104 1

    Business Letter Format

    • When you write a thank you to someone for a personal matter, you'd commonly send a handwritten card or note. However, when writing to a professional organization or donor, treat this as a business communication. Use a standard business letter format when writing a thank you letter.

Place your address first as the sender, then the date, the inside (recipient's) address, your greeting ("Dear Mr. Smith:"), the body and finally the closing salutation. Put one line between each section and between each paragraph of the body in your letter for a professional appearance. If you wrote a cover letter to the organization, you can just use that same template to write the thank you. Print it on resume paper.

    Introduction

    • Start off your thank you letter by expressing your excitement at receiving the scholarship award. Thank the addressee for the privilege. Briefly discuss how you plan to utilize the scholarship money, such as studying engineering to reach your goal of inventing useful innovations for consumers. Explain to the scholarship representative exactly why you believe this award of money is so important to furthering your education.

    Accolades to the Organization

    • In the body of your thank you letter, discuss the significance of the organization, instead of just talking about yourself. If the organization that offers the scholarship promotes a cause that is of particular importance to you, such as a charity or service to the public, explain that to further express your joy at having received the award.

    Closing

    • Close your scholarship letter by repeating your message of thanks (but take care to spell out "thank you"). You can thank the organization for selecting you, or thank the organization in general for helping in the community. If you have an upcoming award ceremony to attend to receive the scholarship money, state that you're looking forward to the event.

Start the closing salutation with either "Sincerely" or "Regards," skip about four lines, and then type your full name. Sign your name right above your printed name before sending the letter.
