Toyota Prius Steering Column Problems

104 6

    Problems

    • The Prius's main steering column problem has to do with the failure of the electronic power steering system. Failures of the power steering system can result in the steering column vibrating and/or making a "rattling" noise. In some cases, the steering wheel locks, making it difficult to turn.

    Recall

    • Numerous steering-related consumer complaints led Toyota to recall the Prius in May 2006. The recall, which was intended to correct an unnamed power steering defect, affected over 170,000 vehicles manufactured from 2003 to 2005.

    Solution

    • If your Prius was manufactured between 2003 and 2005, your Toyota dealer will repair your steering unit free of charge. Any model years not included in the recall will require a new steering pump, which costs approximately $293 for parts and labor in 2011, according to Auto MD.
