  Over the first decade of the new millennium, hybrid cars are gaining more popularity because of their fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly nature. Car manufacturers are constantly investing in technologies---such as hybrids---that offer solutions and alternatives to fossil fuels since they are a non-renewable resource. Although there are many advantages, owning a hybrid car today is not as advantageous as it may seem, as there are many disadvantages as well.
  
  

Expenses

• Hybrid cars generally cost $3,000 to $5,000 more than their conventional counterparts. The most basic hybrid car is generally the same price as a conventional vehicle that is fully loaded with features and options. Since hybrids are running on newer and more modern technology, as compared to traditional vehicles, the cost to produce them is higher.
  
  

Battery Issues

• Hybrid cars are "hybrid" for a reason---the batteries are not powerful enough to run the car on their own. Replacement batteries can be extremely expensive should a problem occur. They can also pose a risk to people who come into contact with them as they have a significant electrical charge. In cold conditions, the batteries rarely run on an optimum level, leading to higher fuel consumption in cold weather.
  
  

Maintenance

• Since hybrid cars are running on newer and less widespread technology, most of their maintenance can only be done through their official service centers. Sometimes, these service centers are well out of reach for average car owners, especially those who live in rural areas.
  
  

Replacement Parts

• Just as maintenance can be tricky, finding replacement parts for hybrid cars can be difficult as well. Conventional car parts are far more accessible since they are made not only by car manufacturers, but by third-party companies too. For hybrids parts, you need to go directly to your dealership for replacement parts, and there is no guarantee that you'll get your replacement immediately, as many have to be specially ordered.
  
  

Size and Performance

• Hybrid cars are intentionally made lighter and more compact because of their focus on efficiency. If a prospective buyer is looking for comfort and space, a hybrid car might not be her best option. Conventional cars are also far better in terms of acceleration and speed.
