How to Visit the Tower of London
- 1). Head to the turreted White Tower, which many people equate with the Tower of London. William the Conqueror created it to impress Londoners and keep them from revolting after the Norman invasion of 1066. Its position near the river also made it a great spot to sight foreign invaders. Step inside to see the Chapel of St. John the Evangelist and the Royal Armouries Collection, which includes Henry III's personal armor.
- 2). Prepare for a lesson in royal history when you view the Crown Jewels. The Jewel House contains the spectacular collection of crowns, swords, staffs and scepters, many still in use today. Highlights include the famous Cullinan and Koh-i-Noor diamonds.
- 3). Spend the rest of the day exploring. Pay a visit to the Medieval Palace to see what royal accommodations were like and get a feeling for the tower by taking the East Wall Walk. Stop in at the Bloody Tower where Richard III supposedly had his two nephews murdered.
- 4). Take an organized tour. The Yeoman Warders (often called Beefeaters) give hour-long guided tours of the exteriors, the Welcome Centre offers "Family Trails" and audio guides are available.
