    Washington University in St Louis

    • Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, is a mid-sized, independent university that offers two accredited degree programs in social work. The social work program at WUSTL was ranked as the best social work program in America by U.S. News and World Report's 2008 college rankings. The graduate program, which leads to a master's degree, is a two-year program that requires the completion of 60 credit hours. Some of the curriculum includes classes such as research methods, human behavior, social justice and human diversity. The doctoral program requires the completion of 72 credit hours emphasizing theoretical and methodological preparations for the field of social work. To complete the program a qualifying examination must be taken, as well as the completion of a research dissertation. It takes two to three years to complete the doctoral program.

    University of Washington

    • The University of Washington is one of the oldest public universities on the West Coast. Located in downtown Seattle, Washington, UW ranked fourth for social work in U.S. News and World Report's 2008 college rankings. UW offers undergraduate, graduate and doctorate programs in social work. These programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The bachelor degree program requires completion of 63 credit hours of coursework, community service and 480 hours of supervised field experience. Some of the courses include human behavior and the social environment, cultural diversity and justice and social welfare policy. The master's degree requires the completion of 36 credit hours and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in each graduate level course. Successful completion of the master's practicum courses is necessary. The doctoral degree requires full-time residency and includes 10 or more credits per quarter for two years. During the final year of study, students must pass a set of comprehensive examinations and defend their dissertation before the degree is conferred.

    Florida State University

    • Located in Florida's capital of Tallahassee, Florida State University is a public university that offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs in social work. These programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The bachelor’s degree program is sequence structured, requiring four semesters to complete 50 hours of coursework. This requires 512 hours of field placement so students can gain supervised professional experience. Some of the coursework includes social welfare and policy, introduction to social work and social policy. The graduate program requires the completion of 61 credit hours and an internship. The doctoral degree admits only the top six to eight applicants and takes four years to complete. The final semesters of the doctorate program require the completion of a practicum, preliminary exams and a dissertation defense. U.S. News and World Report's 2008 college rankings has FSU ranked as the 30th best college for social work in the U.S.
