In Your Yard

• 1). Inspect your yard near the septic tank's location, and along the sewer lines that run from under your house to the tank.
  
  
• 2). Look for pools of water accumulating anywhere near the tank or the sewer pipes. The pipes are usually buried underground, so you're looking for abnormal pools of water or waste.
  
  
• 3). Use a flashlight and check underneath the sewer pipes under your house for drips, leaks or pooling water.
  
  

In Your House

• 1). Check the toilets and ensure that they flow normally when flushed. Toilets that consistently flush slowly may be a sign that your septic tank is getting full.
  
  
• 2). Check every location where drainage pipes exit your house. This includes washing machine drain pipes, dishwasher drain pipes, and sinks and tubs. Look for any leaks, pooling water, or signs of waste escaping from the drains or pipes.
  
  
• 3). Do a smell check. If you smell waste or strong odors in your house, your septic tank may be backing up.
