For horror and scare enthusiasts, Halloween lasts for all of October. Visiting haunted houses is a great way to get into the spirit of the holiday, as most open the first week of the month. There are three haunted houses in the Phoenix area and many more available in other parts of Arizona. - Jack and Jill's Haunted Hill takes the nursery rhyme script and twists it. In this haunt, you follow the trail of Jack and Jill up a hill to find out why they never came back down again. Open most weekends in October, Jack and Jill's can also be reserved for private groups. It's appropriate for all ages by following two different story lines. One is reserved for children 5 or older and is considered a "mildly scary time." The other is 18 and up with a more frightening, adult script. As of 2010, the cost of admission was a $5 donation.

The house itself consists of multiple sets including a graveyard, haunted mansion, insane asylum and a special Pirates of the Scare-ibbean. Behind the scenes are a team of actors, make-up artists, directors and more. They even offer a theater program for local youth to participate in the frights. The Haunting does even more for Phoenix youth because a portion of its proceeds benefits two nonprofits: the Luv Shack Ranch Horse Rescue and the Catalyst Arts Academy.

halloweenexpressaz.com - The ScareKrow is a smaller haunted house right at the border of Phoenix and Glendale. It keeps costs low by being organized and performed by volunteers, family and friends. It was first opened in 1993 by Halloween enthusiasts who convert their home and corn maze into a horror adventure. The owners of the house, David and Yukari, find a new charity every year and donate the proceeds to it. According to their website, it is always a charity focused on helping children in need. Although small, the ScareKrow offers three different "rated" tours of the haunt. Upon admittance, visitors request the rating they are brave enough to handle. G is appropriate for children under 8, PG for children under 10 and R for 13 and older.
