How to Meditate For Beginners - Overcoming Mind Chatter

103 6
Learning how to meditate for beginners is not difficult.
You probably do it already on some level everyday without even realizing it.
One of the most difficult obstacles to overcome is "mind chatter".
When starting out in any type of meditation routine, it's important to understand ahead of time that mind chatter is normal.
Many people resist the mind chatter and get frustrated, quit and say "Meditation doesn't work".
A good rule of thumb: resistance = persistence.
By resisting the mind chatter and trying to ignore it, you are enabling the mind chatter to get louder and more disruptive.
You are giving these destructive thoughts energy and power over you.
It's time to change your game plan! Begin by acknowledging and observing the mind chatter.
You will notice the thoughts that start running through your head will trigger feelings of anxiety and frustration.
No wonder people quit meditating...
who wants to feel that! The good news is, it's within your reach to become a master of your own thoughts...
this is one of the wondrous things about meditation, empowerment! Try this, the next time you sit down to meditate, begin by visualizing yourself as a giant looking down into a huge boxing ring.
All your thoughts begin to enter the ring and start knocking each other around.
Do not enter the ring, just observe which thoughts surface to enter the ring.
Some of the thoughts may be more destructive than others, but this doesn't matter because you are not in the ring.
When the thoughts begin to exhaust themselves and dissipate, the match is over.
Now we move on to the stillness and quiet of our own mind.
Just remember to breath, keep breathing and filling those lungs up with fresh oxygen.
I know this little scenario sounds corny, but it totally works.
In essence you are taking control of your own mind and saying "hey, I am gonna give you about 2 minutes to complain and then I am moving on".
You will be amazed at how the energy of the thoughts evaporate.
And not once did you lose control and allow yourself to be effected by the thoughts.
Try it, you will see.
