One of the signs of the revitalization of Rio de Janeiro's historic center is the opening of bars such as Mercado 32, which, along with very traditional bars and restaurants, helps compose an upbeat dining and nightlife scene in Historic Downtown Rio. The bar is part of a nightlife hub centered around Praça XV de Novembro, Praça XV for short.

Opened in 2001, Mercado 32 is named for its address on Market Street, which in the past used to lead to a fish market.

It occupies one of several restored old buildings lining the street. The indoor area is decorated with wall art evoking Rio history. There is a main room which is used for happy hour with live music, parties and shows A mezzanine is used for catered events.

Appetizers - codfish croquettes, carpaccio, quiches - and grilled dishes such as ostrich, chicken and tri-tip are some of the specialties served. Drinks include Brahma draft beer, caipirinha and caipivodka.

Happy hour is one of the best in Old Downtown - the oudoor tables, smack on the historic sidewalk, seats 80 and gets bustling whenever the weather allows.
