For example, if you experience being trapped in an elevator due to a power failure you may develop a fear of elevators.
As a result, you may actually suffer from panic attacks whenever you are faced with having to ride in an elevator.
It may first start as a little tingle along your nerves or shortness of breath every time you get into an elevator and each time it becomes increasingly worse until you are no longer able to use an elevator without experiencing a panic attack.
The basic underlying factor of all panic attacks is fear and if you are looking to cure panic attacks or treat panic attacks you have to be willing to look at and face the fear behind them.
This is not as easy as it sounds but it is the trick to overcoming panic attacks.
After all the only reason many people have panic attacks is because they simply become use to having them.
In other words if you suffer from panic attacks often times it is because you have been conditioned to respond in that manner to that or similar situations.
Here are a few things to know that can help you when you are looking at panic attacks.
First, panic attacks will not kill you.
They may be uncomfortable, make it hard to breath and may make your heart race but unless you have an underlying medical condition you are not going to die strictly from the symptoms of a panic attack.
For many people the fear that the situation that they are in will kill them is what fuels the attack.
The first step to cure panic attacks is to take a deep breath and recognize that it is fear you are feeling and that it is all right to be afraid of certain things.
Then consider your options.
It is not a good idea to continue to avoid the situation that is causing the fear and your panic attacks.
It may actually cause an increase in symptoms and triggers and even make it worse to do that.
The best thing to do is to do exactly what makes you feel uncomfortable.
For example if you have a fear of small spaces consider spending time in a room that makes you feel only slightly uncomfortable.
This will not trigger an attack but will give you that tingle that is the start of one.
Simply think positively and look around noting consciously that there is nothing to fear when you are used to that size room go slightly smaller and so forth until you overcome your panic attacks and fear of small spaces.
It takes time to do this but can be well worth the effort.
There are many ways to overcome panic attacks and while they may seem difficult at first to overcome they can be overcome by dealing directly with the underlying fear that is causing them.
