How to Melt a Chocolate Chip With Solar Energy
- 1). Place the aluminum pan in direct sunlight. This has to be done on a bright day, when there are no clouds blocking the pan from absorbing heat. Preferably the pan has some nonstick coating or the chip will have to be scraped off once melted.
- 2). Leave the pan in the sun long enough to heat up. Depending on the temperature that day this could take only a few minutes or a couple of hours.
- 3). Place the chocolate chip in the center of the pan, in direct sunlight. Do not touch the pan while doing this as the entire metal surface will be hot.
- 4). Melt the chip in the pan. Once again depending on the days's temperature this could take only a few minutes or many more.
- 5). Use a magnifying glass (or a pair of clear glasses) to help melt the chip if the pan isn't hot enough, or the chip is taking too long to melt. Hold the glass out in the sun and aim the lighted dot that comes through its shadow at the chip. Leave that point on the chip until it starts to melt. Don't leave the point on the chip too long as this can be hot enough to burn through thin surfaces and leaving it too long will result in a burn instead of an even melt.
