A Soul in the Wind (By (Richard Finegold,Llumina Press 2008, ISBN 978-1-59526-750-4) is good, is funny, is sad, and is made up of all the elementsdefining life.
But just as life has its ups and downs, this hilarious, yet sad, tale of Gideon Fruitman (the book's subtitle is "Excerpts from the Book of Life) is one that should be read by anyone (especially those born in the immediate yearsfollowing World War 2) .
It's the story of a young boy, a schoolmilk monitor who "accidentally" peeks up the dress of a blossoming young female classmate.
And it's the story of a young boy and young man, rejected by the fairer gender, but who later, to the dismay of his wife, becomes the object of affection by women who fall all over him.
It's the story of a dysfunctional family, loving grandparents, friends that are no longer friends, older women trying to seduce Gideon Fruitman, drugs, death and all the things that many of us may have encountered on our road to becoming an adult.
Gideon marries, divorces, remarries and eventually becomes a successful lawyer.
But with success comes disaster.
Author Finegold's book has the makings of a classic-if only he had submitted this epic to a professional editor.
A Soul in the Wind could easily have been edited to create shorter chapters, allowing its final length to be one-third less than its current length.
And that's really a shame because it's a tale that should be read.
