How to Bolt Down Felt Roofing

104 7
    • 1). Place a ladder against the structure you are roofing and take your felt roofing installation supplies and tools up.

    • 2). Sweep the plywood roof of debris to bolt down the felt roofing against a bare and clean surface.

    • 3). Roll out the felt roofing, starting at the edge and working your way from one side of the roof, over the top to the opposite side. Cut off the excess at each end with a utility knife.

    • 4). Measure and cut two 36-inch-wide drip edges to go along the eves of the roof, using a tape measure and utility knife. The two drip edges act as a channel for runoff rain and snow.

    • 5). Fold the drip edges over lengthwise and spread asphalt-based roofing cement on the underside of each of the two drip edges using a serrated trowel.

    • 6). Press both drip edges down flat against the roof and fasten into place using a claw hammer and roofing nails. Space the nails about 6 inches apart along both sides of each drip edge.

    • 7). Go to the next course of loose felt roofing and fold up both sides lengthwise. Spread asphalt-based roofing on each underside with your serrated trowel, then lay the felt roofing flat against the plywood, overlapping the drip edge by a couple of inches. Secure the course in place with roofing nails and a hammer.

    • 8). Repeat Step 7, working from the first secured drip edge to the other side, overlapping each course, sealing the underside with asphalt-based roofing cement and securing to the plywood with roofing nails until each course is installed.
