Recycled Materials

• Shop at retail outlets that sell recycled and reclaimed goods only. Start by making a list of items you need to replace in your basement. Remodel your basement's bathroom with a sink, toilet and cabinets that are reclaimed from a closed business. Most recycled and reclaimed items are cheaper in price and in good condition. Don't forget to check salvage stores for items that may fit your basement decor, especially if your basement is used as a kid's room or gaming room.
  
  

Insulation

• If you are doing a total basement remodel and you are replacing the insulation, go with an insulation that is made from recycled paper and cardboard. Determine how much you will need before buying the insulation so you won't have to throw out any unused material. Make sure the insulation has a mold-retardant chemical added to reduce the chance of mold and mildew forming in your basement.
  
  

Forest Service Council Certified Wood

• If you are replacing any structures in the basement that are made of wood, replace them with Forest Service Council (FSC) certified wood. This wood is reclaimed or engineered lumber that eliminates the need to cut down and process live trees. Note, this wood is slightly higher in price. Use FSC wood to replace rotted door framing, floors or trim or even to build a bar or other structure in your basement.
  
  

Lighting

• When replacing lights in your basement, try to go with as much natural lighting as possible. Instead of installing and using artificial lighting, make the window openings bigger and purchase windows composed of recycled parts. The natural lighting will make the basement warmer and your energy costs will be reduced as well. When purchasing lighting, get energy-efficient bulbs such as fluorescents.
  
  

Paint and Flooring

• When it comes to painting your basement's walls, paint them a shade of white to make the space appear bigger and to help reflect natural lighting throughout the space. Avoid dark colors and don't forget to use a flooring that is composed of recycled material. Your paint and supplies should be chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) free and safe for the environment.
