Federal grants are provided to the public to help stimulate professional, economic and personal development. While most grants are given to support housing, education, small businesses and nonprofit organizations, there are federal grants available to individuals for remodeling. Federal grants available for home remodeling are intended to be used to improve living conditions, or to adjust homes owned by individuals with disabilities. - The Department of Veterans Affairs runs the Specially Adapted Housing Program and its funding services. This program aids disabled military veterans in the remodeling of their homes in order to modify the space to improve mobility and independent living. Remodeling projects include changes to hallways, bathrooms, flooring upgrades, pathways, doors, outdoor spaces, and modifications to garages and carports. In 2008, the program extended the funding; it now provides multiple grants to eligible veterans for up to three home remodeling projects.
- The Rural Housing Preservation grants are given to individuals living in very low-income communities within rural areas with very small populations (20,000 or less). These grants are intended to improve living and sanitary conditions, and to bring homes up to local codes.
- The Very Low Income Housing Repair Program and Home Repair Loan and Grant Program are intended for individuals who are 62 or older who need to remodel their homes to improve their condition and safety. Money can be used to improve bathrooms, fix leaking roofs, provide running water and central heating inside the home and construct modifications for someone with disabilities. The amount of grants given totals up to $7,000. If the property is sold within three years of receiving the grant, the federal government may seek to recapture the grant money.
- FEMA gives grants to aid in the repairs and restoration of property destroyed in a disaster. The grants provide funding for fixing safety and sanitary hazards and to make homes functional for living. FEMA works with the Federal Direct Housing and National Disaster Loans, which provides grants for home remodeling projects not covered by FEMA.
