What Is an Electrical Meter Base?
- The meter is the unit calculating the amount of electricity in use within the structure. This allows the utility company to bill owners for correct usage. Most of the time, the meter reading is correct and no problems exist.
- The base unit containing the meter rarely needs a replacement. Several situations could make replacement necessary. As a meter base ages, rust sets in from the elements, negatively affecting the base unit. Another situation occurs when a home sells. The new owner can request replacement of the older meter base to raise it to current city code. Electrical work in progress at the residence may trigger the issuance of a city permit. The city may mandate the meter base comply with current code.
- Changing size or configuration of the electrical panel servicing the home means a larger meter may be necessary. The meter base unit will need an enlargement to meet extended capacity of new service.
