Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

101 17
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic medium by which hypnosis is used by a trained, professional therapist to guide the client to a state of natural mental and physical deep relaxation. It is a state similar to that which we all exist in right on the edge of sleep, where awareness is there on the periphery of our consciousness but our minds are relaxed.

Hypnosis is, therefore, a totally relaxed state of mind. While in the hypnotic state, the conscious mind is allowed to rest – to still the thinking, analysing, planning, and worrying which consume most of us for much of our waking time. As such, the subconscious mind can be accessed – and it is in the subconscious that all memories, negative thoughts, past traumas, etc are stored.

Hypnosis is very similar to the natural daydreaming state we find ourselves in on a daily basis. The mind "takes a break"; hypnosis and hypnotherapy make use of the conscious mind's ability to tune out from its surroundings and tune into the subconscious.

How does hypnotherapy work? It is believed that hypnosis alters the conscious state in such a way that the creative right side of the brain is accessed more fully, while the analytical left brain is "switched off".  The subconscious part of the mind is more deep seated and instinctive, and without changing the way it responds to a situation, all the conscious intention in the world will not be effective. For example, an anxious person may know they need not worry – but until the subconscious is convinced of this, anxiety will remain.

By accessing the subconscious mind, the therapist can guide and assist the client to achieve much healing in a short space of time – much more quickly and effectively than in many other forms of therapy. Hypnotherapy can be a tool to help clients overcome phobias; stop smoking and leave behind other addictions; manage stress; combat fears such as those of flying, snakes, and public speaking; lose weight; boost self confidence; heal or leave behind bad relationships; reduce pain associated with surgery, dentistry, or childbirth; and offers many other benefits to physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Conditions such as migraine, stuttering, asthma, chronic pain, hypertension, insomnia and bed wetting can be minimised or even cured. It does this by "reprogramming" or releasing patterns of thought and behaviour deep in the mind; phobias, negative thought patterns, irrational fears and suppressed emotions can be released and healed.

Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis does not involve the client being put into a deep sleep. A client cannot be made to do anything they do not wish to do. At all times, they are aware of their surroundings and are invulnerable to the therapist's suggestions. Hypnotherapy will only work if the client wants it to.

A client's ability and readiness to be placed under hypnosis is varied and some will take several sessions to achieve results. The client is in control and hypnotherapy is considered to be safe in the hands of a qualified and registered therapist.
