How to Construct an Artificial Fish Reef
- 1). Consult scientists and specialists as to what depth to place the materials at, based on the environment that you plan to place them in and do some field tests at the location before engaging in the project, to be sure that reef will grow properly.
- 2). Get permission from the local government or environmental agency before dumping. In most cases dumping is illegal, so it's important to get the correct permits and permission for your reef-creation project before you start dumping.
- 3). Gather resources for large objects such as plastics, cement and metal. Try contacting large companies that may have old structures that they want to demolish. Offer to take these large materials away from the companies for free.
- 4). Rent or buy a large truck with a crew of qualified people and transfer your large objects onto the truck and to either a storage location or directly to to ocean.
- 5). Rent or buy a barge or boat with an installed crane.
- 6). Transfer your materials to the boat and take the boat out to sea to the spot on which you want to build the artificial reef.
- 7). Transfer the materials into the water in a cluster pattern. Group the dumped materials as close together as possible.
