How to Modify an Abu 6000c
- 1). Attach the Abu Garcia 6000c reel to a baitcasting rod, which can be identified by the trigger-shaped piece of plastic that extends down from the handle. Make sure the rod and reel are balanced and feel comfortable in your hands. Spool the reel with fishing line.
- 2). Attach a lure to the fishing line. The best weights for 6000c reels range from about 1/4 of an ounce to more than 1 oz.
- 3). Adjust the drag of the reel. On 6000c reels, the drag is controlled by a star-shaped piece of metal or plastic on the handle. A drag that's set properly releases line from the reel's spool when there is pressure on the end of the line. Turning the drag counterclockwise loosens the drag; turning it clockwise tightens it. For most fishing applications, you should have the drag set just slightly, so that a heavy pull on the end of the line will cause the drag to release line. The drag also can be loosened or tightened while you are fighting a fish.
- 4). Locate the magnetic resistance of the reel. On the 6000c, the magnetic resistance is controlled via a knob on the same side of the reel as the handle. Loosen the magnetic resistance by turning the knob counterclockwise; turn it clockwise to tighten it. The magnetic resistance controls the spool of the reel and how much pressure it takes to make the spool spin. With little resistance, the spool spins under little pressure. Set the magnetic resistance so that if you allow the lure to drop to the floor, it drops quickly but does not cause the line on the reel to backlash.
