Choosing a Digital Picture Frame

103 5
Choosing a digital picture frame is not that easy.
There are a great number of cheap digital picture frames on the market, some good, some not so good, the question is - what makes a good frame and does it have to cost the earth? Why does it matter? It matters because my wife asked me to pick one up when I popped into town, no problem until she smiled and added the phrase "and try to put more thought into it than you do for our anniversary!" Right, how hard could it be? Armed with righteous indignation I stormed out on a mission to make her eat those words.
These and the following are all very relevant questions that I thought of in the car on the way and a few more that arose in the following days, ( I soon discovered this was no easy mission), I have tried to answer them as clearly as possible in a non-tech way but if you have any questions drop me a line.
What makes a good frame? • Is it the size of display, • The number of display pixels or resolution, • The aesthetic appearance, • Ease of use, • Is it wireless or do you have to connect it to a computer or insert a card, • Does it run on the mains or does it run on batteries? When I was looking to buy my first digital frame I was amazed at the cost.
I looked at this tiny 6 x 4 display unit compared to its cost and was staggered.
Surely a traditional album was a better option? Then I thought of all the neglected albums that I had sitting in a cupboard at home and realised that a digital frame was the best way to show off my images.
I knew there had to be cheap digital picture frames out there that were value for money, the trick was finding them.
I had a lot of questions in addition to those mentioned above: • One of the biggest questions for me was, would the frame have enough capacity to display the images that I want? • Where could I display it so that people could actually see the images without standing 3 inches from the frame? • Could I alter the way in which the images were displayed, for instance could I alter the length of time each individual image was displayed before moving onto the next? • Could I alter the size of the images so that they filled the screen or would the software do it automatically? • Would I have to edit the images on my computer before uploading them onto the frame's hard drive, if so what software would I need, how much would it cost and where would I get if from, or would the software come with the frame? • How long would the battery last (if it used batteries), could I use rechargeable batteries or is it an internal lithium battery? • Where would be the best place to get a frame? • What is the average cost? • Could I get them cheaper online or is it best to go in-store? I had so many questions! I realised that I was going to have to conduct some serious research to answer them and if I was going to go to all that effort then I would make some notes and pass the information on to others who might be in the same boat.
