How to Replace a Galvanized Pipe With PEX
- 1). Turn the water off to the house's main water valve, or at the water meter with a meter key.
- 2). Disconnect both ends of the galvanized pipe. If the pipe is in between two immovable fittings, cut it in half with a hacksaw. Unscrew the two pieces from each fitting using pipe wrenches.
- 3). Install new PEX fittings at each end with pipe thread sealant and pipe wrenches. Coat the male threads of the brass PEX fittings with the brush provided in the Teflon paste can. Screw the PEX fittings into the joints by hand, and then tighten them with your pipe wrenches.
- 4). Install new PEX piping on each fitting with copper crimp rings and a PEX crimping tool. Slide the copper crimp ring on the smooth cut end of the PEX pipe, and then push the pipe over the fitting. Hold the PEX crimp tool level at a 90-degree angle to the ring, and crimp by closing the PEX tools jaws around the ring.
- 5). Turn the water meter back on and check the plumbing system from leaks. Visually inspect every joint, crimp and fitting for signs of water leakage.
