How To Furnish Your Home Office

102 7
Working from home is a great pleasure. You don't have to get up early in the morning, and there's no need to fight traffic before you start your workday. However, you do need a comfortable, attractive and functional home office in which to work. Your home office may be a small area in your family room or a large, spare bedroom. One thing is certain, no matter how small or large your office space, you need to create a comfortable workspace if you want to be productive and focused.

Office Furniture

Depending upon the nature of your business, you will need certain office furniture basics. Most likely you will need a computer stand and file cabinet and shelves to hold office equipment like printers, fax machines or scanners. A home office has to be as organized as any corporate workspace, so consider your storage issues and purchase furniture that can help you stay organized during your work day. Don't forget the need for a work table to lay out your business documents, receipts or invoices before you file them, and purchase a paper shredder to keep your clients' information from being stolen or misused.

Lighting

Pay attention to the lighting in your home office space. Try to avoid harsh overhead lighting, and use recessed lighting, spot lighting and soft light to illuminate your work area. Bright, direct light can cause a harsh glare on your computer screen and make you feel fatigued from eye strain.

Seating

You need to have a very comfortable chair if you are working at the computer most of the day. Any old chair will not do. Instead, invest in a commercial, office computer chair. Ergonomically designed, computer chairs are adjustable and will support your back and keep you comfortable throughout your workday.

Décor

If you intend to spend eight hours or more in your home office, it's important to make your office space appealing to your eye. Place a living plant on your desk or file cabinet, add some of your favourite art work to the walls and select curtains or window coverings that are attractive but also capable of adjusting the amount of natural light in your office space. Studies show that an attractive workspace increases productivity and elevates one's mood, so design your office space in a way that not only helps you become more efficient but also inspires you as well.
