How to Prevent Botulism Exotoxin
- 1). Avoid consuming foods from bulging cans. Bulging cans indicate that air and bacteria have entered the preserved food. According to the Mayo Clinic, botulinum exotoxin can also exist in improperly preserved food.
- 2). Use a pressure cooker to cook your foods at high heat before storing them in cans or containers. The Mayo Clinic recommends you set the dial to 250 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes or more.
- 3). Store your cooking or dipping oils containing herbs and garlic in your refrigerator. Botulinum exotoxin is likely to form in these food products at room temperature, says the Mayo Clinic.
- 4). Avoid giving your infant corn syrup or honey before the age of 1. These condiments can carry botulinum exotoxin to which infants are susceptible.
- 5). Do not inject illicit drugs, because this can lead to wound botulism.
