Flatiron Overview:

The Flatiron District gets its name from the Flatiron Building, one of New York’s oldest skyscrapers. The building was completed in 1902 and earned its "Flatiron" name from its resemblance to a cast-iron clothes iron (it was originally called the Fuller Building). Primarily commercial, the Flatiron area of Manhattan has recently become home to various tech startups, earning the nickname "Silicon Alley."

Shake Shack, the popular burger joint, has an outpost in the middle of Madison Square Park, and often requires a line-around-the-block wait. Mario Batali has recently opened the mega Italian market Eataly in the area. Eataly is technically not a restaurant, but a sprawling food complex, but try not enjoying a night of eating here (and climb the steps to La Birerra on the roof). Hill Country has the lowdown on great Texas barbecue, and Live Bait provides the area with Southern comfort food and inexpensive beer.

Flatiron Nightlife:

The Flatiron District can be somewhat quiet at night, but that doesn’t mean it has nothing to offer. Todd English’s CrossBar offers an extensive cocktail and appetizers menu, including the sort of delectable pork dishes he’s known for. Slate is the go-to upscale billiards and beers hangout. Jay-Z even has his 40/40 club here, offering bottle service and celeb spotting every weekend.

Flatiron Parks and Recreation:

A green, grassy spot in the middle of the skyscrapers, Madison Square Park offers a dog run, fountains, and lunchtime seating for area office workers looking for a moment in the sun.

Flatiron Landmarks and History:

The neighborhood has seen many monikers come and go. It was referred to as The Toy District for most of the early 20th Century and the Photo District up until the 1980s. It has since been referred to as The Flatiron District for the distinctive Flatiron Building standing at 175 5th Avenue since 1902.
