Top-Loading Machines

• The top-loading version of the Maytag Atlantis model uses a belt to run the motor throughout the wash cycle. If this belt gets worn down or breaks, a burning smell may be emitted from the machine anytime during the cycle. You can either call a repairman to replace the belt or you can attempt to replace it yourself by buying the belt from a parts dealer and accessing the belt area in the back of the machine.
  
  

Front-Loading Machines

• The newer front-loading Maytag Atlantis models have a direct drive system that connects the motor to the transmission without the need for a belt. In this type of machine, the burning smell could be coming from either the transmission or the motor and would give off an electrical smell rather than the burning rubber smell you get from a worn out belt. Either way, you should call in an expert to fix the problem, because it’s much more complicated than replacing a belt. If you detect this smell, turn the machine off immediately and unplug it to be safe.
  
  

Water Damage

• If your machine is giving off an electrical burning smell and there is nothing wrong with either the motor or the transmission, the electrical wiring of your machine may have been exposed to water at some point. The water may have been from a flood or from a leak somewhere in your house or from your washing machine. In any case, the matter should be addressed quickly so it doesn’t cause further damage to your home or machine.
  
  

Considerations

• Keep in mind that a burned-out belt could be caused by overloading the machine past its capacity too many times. Consult your owner’s manual to determine exactly how much your machine can hold. If in doubt, use smaller loads to avoid over-stressing the motor and transmission. In top-loading models, overloading the machine causes the agitator to freeze and malfunction, which could produce a burning smell during the agitating process of the washing cycle.
