How Do I Trim Formica to the Right Size?
- 1). Place the sheet of Formica on a large flat work surface so that the top of the Formica is facing downward. It's best to cut Formica before attaching it to the counter, although small amounts of trimming can be performed later.
- 2). Use a straight edge tool or tape measure to draw the cut line onto the Formica with a pencil. Make sure you allow at least 1/2 inch of additional Formica on all sides so that you can trim it perfectly into shape later. Not all walls are perfectly even and you may need to cut the Formica at a slight angle to achieve a perfect fit.
- 3). Place a strip of masking tape along the part of the Formica that you wish to cut. Not only does the masking tape help to cut a straight line, but it also prevents the edges of the Formica from cracking and splitting during the cutting process.
- 4). Place a fine-toothed blade into a circular table saw and then turn the saw on. Place the saw blade into the center of the masking tape and cut the Formica by following the tape line.
- 5). Install the Formica onto the counter top by following the manufacturer's instructions for gluing.
- 6). Insert a laminate cutting blade into a utility knife and run the knife around the edges of the Formica to score it. Placing the straight edge along the utility knife will help to maintain a straight cut line.
- 7). Place one hand flat on the larger section of the Formica. Grasp the edge of the shorter piece of Formica just beyond the score line. Lift up quickly on the shorter piece to snap it off cleanly from the rest of the Formica.
