What Kind of Doctor Treats ADHD?
- Pediatricians and family practitioners are the doctors who most commonly diagnose and treat ADHD. Physicians typically treat this disorder by prescribing stimulant medications.
- Behavioral and developmental pediatricians diagnose and treat ADHD in children ranging from 5 to 12 years old. These doctors specialize in developmental and behavioral disorders and can prescribe any necessary medications.
- A psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating behavioral and mental disorders. Psychiatrists can prescribe ADHD medications as well as provide individual and family therapy.
- Child neurologists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing, treating and managing nervous system disorders, including those related to the brain and muscles. Child neurologists can prescribe needed ADHD medication but are not qualified to provide therapeutic services.
- Mental health professionals, such as psychologists and social workers, are able to treat ADHD with psychotherapeutic services, including social skills training and behavioral modification therapy. These professionals are not qualified to prescribe any type of medication, however.
