- Grow sweet pea in full sun in dry to moist conditions. Plant in well-drained soil, six to 12 inches apart for patio varieties and 12 inches apart for the climbing variety.
- Use a knife to nick a spot in the coat of the seed, then plant one inch deep. Climbing varieties need supports like trellis, netting or fencing to grow on. Patio varieties can be planted in multi-purpose potting soil.
- For summer flowers, plant in early spring as soon as the soil is ready. Plant in October and overwinter for early blooms.
- Water the initial planting, then keep moist until winter.
- Feed monthly with a liquid tomato food.
- Cut once flowers are open and place in water up to the flower's neck. Sweet pea can handle a light frost. Cut stems off at ground level after the first hard freeze.
