How to Remove COM Ports in Windows XP

    • 1). Click "Start," "Turn Off Computer" and "Restart" to restart your computer.

    • 2). Press the "F8" function key immediately when your computer's brand logo appears and hold it until the "Windows Advanced Options" menu appears.

      If you see the Windows logo, restart your computer and repeat this step.

    • 3). Use the arrow keys to navigate to "Safe Mode" on the "Windows Advanced Options" menu. Press the "Enter" or "Return" key. Your computer will take a few minutes to enter safe mode.

    • 4). Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Double-click the "System" icon. Click the "Hardware" tab.

    • 5). Click "Device Manager." Click the "+" symbol next to "Ports (COM & LPT)."

    • 6). Click the COM port you want to remove. Press the "Delete" key on your computer's keyboard.

      Click "OK" when prompted with "Warning: You are about to uninstall this device from your system." The COM port is now removed from your system.

    • 7). Click "File" followed by "Exit" to close the Device Manager. Click "Start," "Turn Off Computer" and "Restart" to exit safe mode and start your computer normally.
