Tours in New Grange, Ireland
- Newgrange is older than the Egyptian pyramids.newgrange image by Lena Gr??nwall from Fotolia.com
Constructed in approximately 3,200 B.C., Newgrange is an ancient temple and tomb. The mound, which predates the Egyptian Pyramids, covers more than one acre of land. The mound is designed so that the passageway and chamber are lit by sunlight during the winter solstice. Today, the tourist demand is so high during the winter solstice that tickets for those days must be won by lottery. The summer solstice is also a busy tourist season. - The Bru na Boinne visitors center offers tours of Newgrange Tomb year-round. The center is closed just four days a year, from December 24th through December 27th. Except for groups over 15, the center does not take reservations; all tickets are first come, first served. The center offers three tours, one of Newgrange, one of Knowth and a combined tour. Knowth is only open from Easter through October 28th.
