    What is a Cell Phone?

    • A cellular telephone (shortly called cell phone) is a mobile instrument that converts sounds (such as the human voice) into electrical impulses of different frequencies and the electrical impulses into a tone that matches the original sound. Its basic parts are a transmitter, a receiver, a push-button dial, a ringer, a speaker and a screen, all mounted on a handset. The phone connects to digital cellular services with the use of radio signals.

    History

    • The first telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in March 1876. The first telephone call was made by Bell calling his assistant in the other room, telling him "Come here Watson, I want you." In 1947, AT&T invented the hexagonal cells for mobile phone base stations (the technology used today by cell phones to connect). The first portable cellular phone was invented by Martin Cooper while working for Motorola. Cooper made the first cell phone call in April 1973 in New York.

    How It Works

    • A cell phone works like a two-way radio. It transmits and picks up signals on different radio frequencies to and from the service provider antennas. The name of "cellular" comes from the technology invented by AT&T of dividing a town in hexagonal cells. A regular service provider receives around 800 radio frequencies in a town. The town is virtually divided into hexagonal cells (usually of about 10 square miles). There is an antenna in each cell which receives the signals from cell phones and transmit it to the other antennas or cell phones.

    Features

    • Development over the years allowed producers to include many features into a cell phone. Primarily, it works as a phone and has all the features needed, such as speed dialing, hands-free system, speaker, call-waiting and call redirecting. Besides all these, a cell phone now can include features like texting, calendars, calculators, alarms, a stopwatch, still and video cameras, photo and video display, music players, games and web access.

    Benefits

    • Using a cell phone will make calling an easier experience. It can be carried everywhere, so you won't miss to many calls. Also, this will allow you to place a call whenever you need, no matter where you are. If you can't answer a call, you don't need to worry about having an answering machine. The voice-mail service will save a message for you and keep it there until you decide to delete it. A cell phone will not only keep you in touch with others, but will also entertain you taking photos and videos or listening to music and playing games.
