Not only are vaccinations legally required, they are necessary for the health of your canine companion. Starting as a puppy, your dog will require vaccinations for the duration of his life. Your dog's vet will provide you with a schedule of vaccinations. While some types of working dogs (such as search and rescue dogs) may require a more extensive set of shots, all dogs need the most common types.

    Rabies

    • Required by law, every dog needs his rabies vaccination. Rabies is a universally lethal disease that is easily preventable.

    DHLPPC

    • DHLPPC is a combination vaccination that guards against the most common of canine diseases, including distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvo and corona virus. This vaccine is first given at 6 weeks old and your puppy will require a number of booster vaccinations until he is at least 4 months old. Thereafter, this is a yearly vaccination.

    Bordatella

    • Bordatella is the canine version of whooping cough, and this vaccination is required for any dog that will come in contact with another canine in a public venue. That includes the vet, obedience class or any canine sports.
