How to Address Your Boyfriend in Japanese

104 1
  • 1). Address a boyfriend as your "kareshi" or "koibito," which literally means "boyfriend" in Japanese. Use "ohayou" to say "good morning," "konnichiwa" to say "good afternoon" and "konbanwa" to say "good evening." "San" can be used as a neutral title, appropriate for almost any informal situation.

  • 2). Greet your boyfriend without any hugging or holding hands, which are common behaviors in Western countries but are not so within the Japanese culture. Endearment is not usually displayed openly. This has changed somewhat in recent times but is still not standard or expected behavior.

  • 3). Show your love for your boyfriend by saying "rabu rabu," which young couples say to express their "love love." The phrase "I love you" is expressed with the word "aishiteru." The word "koi" used in a sentence represents a romantic love toward another person. Some loving phrases include "kimi ni muchuu," which means "I am passionate about you," "watashi no isshoo no koibito," which means "you are the love of my life," and "itsumademo issho ni itai," which means "I want to be with you forever." Use these phrases sparingly as Japanese don't generally express their love openly.
